Description

I finally decided to post my system. The timing is good now as this system will stay in place for the foreseeable future. I will continue modifying and tuning my own gear. However, am now doing it for others and will keep my current rig as is moving forward. I am also starting an exciting new cable company named Acoustic BBQ.

I cannot overstate how much additional performance one can extract from their current system with some well planned and executed modifications/upgrades. Every piece in my system was built and or modified/upgraded by me.  Most builders must build to a price point and to make any money they simply cannot afford to use the best parts. They just cannot.

To those who don’t know much about the Lyngdorf 2170, I highly recommend doing some research. It replaced close to $20,000 (retail price) worth of tube separates and wire.  Do I enjoy it as much? No, I enjoy it more. Just a very special piece and the hub that brings the entire sound system together.

The Dali Epicon 6s are wonderful speakers.  Perfect for those looking for full range sound without the huge footprint. They are also wonderful to look at and place in your living space. They do it all folks.  These speakers are musical and nothing like some of their recent razor sharp resolving past designs. The Audiophile’s Wife aporoves!

    • Lyngdorf Audio TDAI 2170
This one is a special find for me.  Built in dac and room correction really bring out the very best of any speaker attached to it. I have modified this unit with Jupiter copper foil & Duelund silver foil output capacitors, Mundorf silver/gold internal wire to binding posts, constrained layer damping of chassis, Furutech IEC, Audio Magic Pulse Generator ZX and Mad Scientist Kegs.
    • Balanced Power Technologies BP-1
I plug two Core Power Technologies conditioners into this unit.  The BPT plugs into a dedicated 20 amp line via a Porter Port outlet. I have also extensively modified this unit with AC outlet filtering caps from Audience, copper shielding, ERS tape/cloth and constrained layer damping.
    • Core Power Technologies Equi=Core 150 & 300
These plug into my BPT balanced power conditioner to my server and Lyngdorf 2170 .  I modified these as follows:

    - added DC blocking circuit
    - added chassis damping
    - copper wrapped the toroid
-wrapped toroid with ERS cloth tape
    - replaced metal toroid bolt and top plate with Teflon and wood
    - replaced power cable with Furutech FP SO22N
    • Sound Science Music Vault II Ultra
Added chasis damping and Linear Power Supply to power the SOTM USB card. Used Audiophile Optimizer and Fidelizer software programs to improve sound quality.

I use Tidal with Roon. Roon does a great job combining my 1400 ripped CDs and Tidal streaming for easy nagivation.

I use both Audiophile Optimizer and Fidelizer software to improve the Sonics of my dedicated music server.
    • Ifi Audio Micro USB 3 reclocker/filter
Wonderful addition to my computer server front end. Really eliminated the last vestige of digital glare and artifacts.
    • Ifi Audio iSilencer
Helps filter out noise out of my music server.
    • TeraDak Linear power supplies
I have two of these that I modified with Mills resistors, Nichicon capacitors, IXYS Fred bridge rectifiers, chassis damping and other goodies. I also built upgraded DC power cords using Canare Quad core bulk wire and Oyaide connectors.

One powers the iFi Micro USB 3 and the other powers my SOTM USB card.
    • Ifi Audio DC purifier - power filter
I have two of these on the DIY power cables feeding the iFi Micro USB 3 reclocker/filter and the SOTM USB card in my music server.
    • Western Electric 10 gauge stranded wire in cloth
I use this as speaker cables running from my Lyngdorf 2170 to my outboard crossovers.
    • My own brand of Acoustic BBQ Full Rack USB cables Acoustic BBQ
My very own recipe beat out my previous favorites including Wireworld, Curious and Phasure Lush. These are very special sounding. I aim for beautiful tone. This cable is all about tone! Rich and warmish mids with silky smooth highs and nice dynamics. I use cotton and copper.....that’s it! I will be introducing my line of Acoustic BBQ cables shortly.
    • DIY power cable DIY power cable
Made using the great sounding Furutech Blue cable - Furutech FP - SO22N and carbon fiber barreled,  rhodium AC connectors.  Used from wall to BPT power conditioner.
    • Herbies Audio Lab Tenderfeet
Under outboard crossovers and Core Power Tech 150&300.
    • Total Contact Contact enhancer
Treated all power and speakers connections.  Treated all crossover connections and part lead outs.  Treated speaker driver solder tabs and wire lead outs from the driver to the solder tabs. Treated USB cables and DC power cables.
    • Dali Epicon 6
I upgraded the crossover replacing sand cast resistors with Path Audio and Mills MRA. I replaced economy tier Solen caps with Jupiter Flat Stacked HT Caps. I love these for their beautiful tone. They are no longer available as the manufacturer found it hard to make any money on the time consumed and difficult built process these require. I had a special stash.

I also used the newer Jantzen Alumen Z caps on the mids. They are very musical and open and the perfect choice for reasonably prices caps needed in tight spaces. Great choice and result. Much better than the Solen caps they replaced.

I used the Audyn True Copper cap on the ribbon super tweeter replacing a very cheap film cap.

Finally I replace the electrolytic shunt cap with a nice Clarity CSA.

The results are just fantastic and well worth my time and effort.

I love the Dali Epicon 6s.  My Lyngdorf 2170 has room correction which really takes away any possible effects of a non-symmetric room. My center image, stage size and imaging are spot on to my ears.

Thank you for the kind comments.  What speakers did you end up with?

Beautiful looking system/room. I have a room similar to yours. My left channel is not backed by a wall. I've considered putting in pocket doors to balance out the room. Came very close to buying DALIs as well. Happy listening!

@grannyring Of course you're right design and implementation can transcend raw materials. And I doubt I can hear up to 15K so I would probably never hear that tweeter! Sounds like your really enjoying them and not missing your Living Voice's so congratulations.

The ribbon only plays at 15k and above. The real work is done by the dome. The combo is seamless and so smooth.  Surprising. Acoustic Zen Crescendo speakers also use a ribbon and the designer has that speaker sounding beautiful with great tone.  Possible to implement a ribbon well.  Not the driver so much as the design and implementation in the speaker.  I least that has been my experience with ribbon drivers.

Beautiful those are gorgeous speakers, love the veneer! Personally I've never heard a ribbon tweeter I could live with but glad you, and Kim, have found speaker happiness. Cheers and happy listening!

All updated @jond

Lot of work updating ones virtual system.  Goodness, I could have modified my power conditioner in the same amount of  time 😊

Thanks for asking.  I just finished updating my system and we both love the speakers. I was very happy with the Dali Epicon 6s in stock form. However, I did tune the speaker more to my liking with crossover upgrades.  I was looking for improved midrange presence, more overall bloom, and a tad more refinement. My upgrade plan was built around these goals.  Part choices were done carefully with these goals in mind. This is a very good speaker. Kim loves the look and sound and I like the sound very much.  The build quality is spectacular. I have about 500 hours now on my crossover upgrades and the results are most pleasing. These are certainly music lovers speakers that are easy to listen to and enjoy.  They are now the equal of the Living Voice speakers in the mids, however the bass is more impactful and deep.  Amazing what Dali manages to achieve in bass performance with 6.5 inch woofers.  Amazing. The highs are also sweeter and more extended.  I can now say these are staying put.

I will be further tuning my system as I learn and incorporate more from Michael Green.  I like his fresh and innovative approach to audio.

@rhljazz

Forgot to mention that my general imaging, center image, and balance is spot on. Perhaps the fact that the wall behind the left speaker is some 5 feet back helps.

Thanks for the kind words Lak! I have developed a USB cable that is really outstanding. Part luck, part hard work with hours of experimentation.  I will be selling it here soon.  Several Agoners are already enjoying it with great feedback.

Also, the only real difference in space for each speaker is the open walk through area behind the right speaker.  My Lyngdorf takes the room out of the equation.  You can tell I am thrilled with the 2170.

The Lyngdorf works wonderfully. I am getting the best sound I have ever enjoyed with this new space. My last room was dedicated and all the gear set up perfectly symmetrical with all manner of room treatments. You know absorbers, diffusers and bass traps etc...  This room sounds better. Go figure!

Lyngdorf’s room correction read my room with 97% knowledge and 9% room correction applied. Only 9% tells me the room is really a pretty good space to start with.

Very different environments for each speaker. Ones loaded by a corner and the other semi free space.  I suspect each speaker provided a mono signal would sound different.  Is the Lyngdorf able to compensate for that difference, or does it look like more of a problem than it sounds?

I like the Equicore products a lot.  Great value for what they contribute sonically.  I found they just helped my system sound more resolving and more at ease at the same time.

I like your setup and especially the upgrades...they make me jealous, I would love to be able to do some on some of my gears, I just dont have half the competence! Would like to either have highly modified/upgraded crossovers on my speakers, or just go active. How do you rate or qualify the plus you get with EquiCore?

Bill that was so fast it made my head spin  damn! Please congratulate your wife on her win for me. :) The Epicon 6 looks interesting but I didn't peg you as a ribbon guy so curious to hear your thoughts. And of course see your mods! Have fun and enjoy the new, new speakers!

Bill - just saw that you posted your system! Living Voice, are you crazy!?.......just kidding. Back in my Shindo days I almost bought these exact speakers. I ended-up getting the Devore Nines which was the much cheaper choice.  These are great speakers. I’ve heard them a number of times.  And I’m sure the “magic” you did to the internals makes them much, much better!  If you ever decide to do the “project” of a custom Impact Monitor we talked about let me know. I’m still very interested.  The pair you modified for me are fully broken-in and are spooky-good!  I’ve changed out my preamp and amp based on what I’ve learned from you.  I’ll be posting on my system page realitively soon.  Best regards and congrats on a great system!

@barrysandy

Yes mods are work.  I spend a lot of time reading and learning out parts and execution. I looked at your system and marvel at that Duelund based passive crossover.  Oh my! Love those Counterpoint amps also. Well done.

Thanks for the kind comments @jond

Many great pieces of audio out there! The Lyngdorf is one and it is a hidden gem - at least here in the USA. I like the synergy with the Living Voice speakers.  The darn unit has worked wonderfully with each and every speaker I have paired with it actually. A word I like of late is “fussy” as it relates to gear and music enjoyment. The Lyngdorf is not fussy or high maintenance. It just sounds right like the LV speaker. Leave it on 24/7 and just enjoy.
