Description

My living room is a bit on the bright side of sounds, but book shelves, carpet and windows curtains help a lot. The Wilson audio Sasha are now on spikes thanks to audiogoners comments, and yes I heard an improvement.

Latest improvement has been the arrival of McIntosh MCT-450 transport. Together with the D-150 DAC it is a perfect match. I wonder how come this pair is so seldom seen or discussed on Audiogon.

I am using Krell pre-amp & amp, and a MacMini with Audirvana to store and manage my music. All together I am a very lucky guy. I have detailed somewhat the cables I am using together with each component. If you have some comments, please don't hesitate.

    • Wilson Audio Sasha 1 - 3 ways loudspeakers
Just got them!! 13 years with Martin Logan Prodigy before. I have listened to Rockport, Kharma, Eggleston, Focal,... and I got lucky and found these speakers at a "reasonable" price. They match well with Krell and can fully function in a room the size of mine. Probably the most impressive change is how well positionned are all the instruments in my room. I also use my system to watch movies and teve. I can literaly follow actors and singers as they move across the space. Less bass obviously than with the Prodigy but much more coherence across the spectrum.

They are still on wheels as I want to give myself some more time to be sure I have them placed as best as possible.
    • McIntosh MCT 450 CD / SACD Transport
Purchased second hand July 2018. It is the perfect match to the D-150 to listen to my CDs. I am using the Din connector especially built by McIntsoh to link them both.
As much as I love the easiness of accessing all my CD collection via my iPad, I must recognize that the sound from a (highend) transport is without equivalent. To my ears, there is more subtility and finess than with Mac Mini + Audirvana
    • McIntosh D-150 DAC
I purchased this DAC early 2017 after total collapse of my faithfull (sic) Wadia 581iSE. Sound is very neat, with a wide spectrum. I compared it with the PS Audio Directsream and the choice was easy. Not only is the Mc less expensive, but much more detailed and less metallic to my ears. I have also listen to the Nagra DAC... I must confess it is better, but not at 3 times the price.

I use the USB input to listen to my music, stored on a Mac Mini (16 Gb RAM, SSD HD), and Audirvana as a digital transport. Much better than iTunes and very sililar to the JRoger23 from a sound perspective.

Cables to forward the sound towards the Pre-amp are Cardas Audio Golden Reference with balance connections. I find them a very good price / quality value (purchased second hand). Any suggestions for even better cables ?
    • Krell Evo-202 Pre-amp

With its separate power chassis the sound improvement compared to the Evo 222 is quite impressive. I can hear it but can't really explain how such a "small" difference can render the sound much fuller, the bass better detailed. In any case both Krell Pre-amp are much more detailed and "full" than the equivalent from MBL that I owned previously.

I am using krell CAST cables to link with the amp. Never tried any other cable or connection. Any idea ?

    • Krell Evo 402 power amp
This amp is one of the last D'Agostino / Krell success. it might not be the best ever amp, but for a stereo amp, it has the power, the energy and the Krell sound that has made loads of hifi fans very happy for a few generations now.  It is set on the side to fit in the piece of furniture. Thanks to this setting the WAF remains within tolerance.

I am using Oelbach "reference" cables to link with the loudspeakers. These cables are very transparants and are thin enough that I managed to hide most of them within the wooden floor. Should I wish to upgrade with other "thin" cables, any suggestions ?
    • MBL T-1 analog Tuner
Never heard a better tuner... And sadly I don't use it much more these days. To listen to the radio I got lazy and use Sonos to access digital radios. Much more choice and I don't need to move from my couch to change from radio to another.

You might benefit from the Wilson instructions for placement of the speakers. As for the Sashas, a general rule is that from your seating position you should barely see the inside of each lower speaker enclosure.

I recommend you check out Roon! As for a tube preamp, I can vouch for the McIntosh C2600 - lovely sounding preamp.

This is a beautiful room and system.  I love rigs like this that are a part of clean, uncluttered living spaces.  +1 that you will have better sound with a rug that covers the reflection points on the floor between the speakers and your ears.  Let her pick the rug -- just get something down there!

Thanks for your comments. Yes a rug would fit nicely and add warm to the room and sound. The "but" being I must compose with my beloved wife whom has not yet found any that would suits her tastes. I am currently testing the loudspeakers without the casters. Thanks for the tip.

I have the  Wilson Sasha 2 (and love them as I am sure you love the Sasha 1) From personal experience, I agree with gp and remove the casters. I would also add, place a rug and work on room acoustics which will be way cheaper and reap multiples in benefits over cables.

Love the books, and that the components don't dominate the look. It's fun because any guest you have that loves audio would zero right in on those lovely components, but other guests would just enjoy the stately space. And, I'm sure it must sound amazing!

Thanks GP.  I did as recommended and you were right. It took me one week to be sure I had the right spot for the Wilson. Now on spikes and even more detailed sound image.

Nice room. Removing the casters and attaching Wilson spike accessories will yield a huge improvement in the sound, esp the low end.

Beautiful system. I like your built-in book and CD shelving.
Which brand(s) of cabling are you using?
Happy Listening!
