Components Toggle details

    • PMC EB1i
    Like a bag of earthquake.
    • Zu Audio Omen Def MKII
With the giant 15lb Radian tweeters.
    • Dynaco Will Vincent rebuild
    • Digital Amplifier Company Classic Cherry
Their standard amp model. Which slays most other class Ds. A comically good value. Bought it for my PMC. Local buddy has the Megachino, and he's brought his over, which made me buy one.
    • NAD C658
Pre / streamer / dac. Milestone product.
    • Denon VL12 Prime
    Turntable, via Zu
    • Zu Audio DL-103M Moving Coil Cartridge
    Their modded house brand.Delish.
    • Xact Audio Phono Seven
Acquired directly from Steve Dobbins, who lives near me in Boise, ID. He has the finest home system & custom room I shall ever experience.
    • Sony HAP-Z1ES
I replaced the hdd with an SSD recently. Now it's good for another 10 years of worry free.

It slays me that the server market exists. This unit is extraordinary in every way, including value. I get the NAS / DAC thing, and I may do that also one day, mostly as I'm keen for ROON. But for a starter system, it's the primo supremo.
    • Pro-Ject Audio Systems Pre Box DS
    Brand new, tiny, it works!
    • BSG Technologies qol
Hearing is believing. Don't judge until you have. Makes a profound difference. I prefer the difference, you may not, and hey, the spice of life, non?
    • Richard Gray 400 pro
    Voltage stabilizer. Or something.
    • Quadraspire SVT Bamboo
Nice rack. I bet you get that a lot.

On a whim decided to go back to separates after 10 years of integrateds. Schiit has the same mofo vibe as Zu, besides being amazingly budget friendly, ergo why not?

Hi @milpai,
The Facts need power. I tried the Minimax once for curiosity and they barely made sound. Sad.

To your question: The Sonist also have dual woofers but twice the diameter, so it's not really apples to apples. Although, the PMC have weirdly strong bass considering their narrow width and driver size. Sonist have higher highs and lower lows. The PMC are dead neutral. Sonist go louder, and can 'rock' better, although the Facts are not timid up to a point.

At the moment I'm using my new local Boise pal @cbozdog Krell KAV-300i integrated on the Sonist and it's pretty amazing (he's using my Sony). Thunderous. I leverage high-eff speakers with amp choices, it's fun. From the 10w of my modded Minimax to the 150w of the Krell, depending on mood. Not sure all high-eff speakers can stretch like that; but both mine sure can. And that opens up many amp possibilities, making this more a true hobby for me.

ps sending a pm.

Hi Scott,
The PMC Fact8 are fairly efficient at 89db 8 ohms. I am also looking for efficient speakers. Can you please elaborate on the areas that the Sonist improved over the PMCs? I would love to have some high efficiency loudspeakers in my system.

Hi @milpai - decided to go with high efficiency speakers only. The Concerto 4 play everything smoothly. Can go plenty loud. Fast transients. The Facts are as neutral as anything I've heard.  Sonist are my new faves.

@jafant book cases from BB&B. They fold flat, all 1 piece, snappy design. Rack is Quadraspire.

Hi Scott,
I am curious about your switch from PMC to Sonist. The PMC Facts are much higher priced. What do the Sonists do better than the PMC?

Thanks!

Where did you buy those book cases/ racks?

Sold the PMC Fact 8 a few days ago, and today the Sonist arrived. Delivered by Jonny of Sonist / Snake River Audio himself (we're both in Idaho; super nice guy btw). Ever evolving, indeed...

One system runs. Agree on the passive pair but not fretting. And I do dig Druid; it's fun how they sing on just a few watts.

Nice.....but just a thought...passive speakers in the same room "absorb" the sound from the active speakers. (the passive speaker moves IN a small amount in proportion to the active speaker pushing out.)   I'm assuming those are two independent systems and do not play at the same time.  But nice to see the Druids...as a fellow Druid owner...
